National Cardiovascular Center Harapan Kita wins at Healthcare Asia Awards 2026

It strengthened Indonesia’s paediatric cardiovascular referral network whilst enabling direct patient feedback.

National Cardiovascular Center Harapan Kita received accolades in the Allied Health Initiative of the Year - Indonesia and Patient Care Initiative of the Year - Indonesia categories at the Healthcare Asia Awards 2026. The recognition highlighted two initiatives addressing paediatric cardiovascular service capacity and patient experience reporting in Indonesia.

Network fostering programme for paediatric cardiovascular care

The hospital implemented the Network Fostering Program for Pediatric Cardiac Surgery and Pediatric Interventional Cardiology to respond to the national treatment gap for congenital heart disease (CHD). Each year, approximately 50,000 infants in Indonesia are born with CHD out of around five million live births. National capacity currently manages about 4,896 cases through surgical and non-surgical procedures, leaving a large number of children without timely treatment. More than half of paediatric cases requiring advanced cardiovascular treatment are referred to the National Cardiovascular Center Harapan Kita.

Indonesia’s geographic structure as an archipelagic country creates uneven access to specialised cardiovascular services. Many regional hospitals face limitations in trained personnel, infrastructure readiness, and clinical experience in paediatric cardiac procedures. These conditions contribute to delayed referrals and long waiting times at tertiary centres.

The network fostering programme expanded paediatric cardiovascular capabilities through mentoring, proctorship, and clinical training conducted by specialist teams. The programme focused on procedures such as right ventricular outflow tract stenting for Tetralogy of Fallot, zero-fluoroscopy closure of atrial septal defect and ventricular septal defect, and catheter-based closure of patent ductus arteriosus.

Implementation reached several provinces, including DKI Jakarta, Central Java, East Java, North Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, and the Special Region of Yogyakarta. A congenital cardiac surgery proctorship programme began in Bali in 2023 and later expanded to West Java, DKI Jakarta, Aceh, and East Java. The programme reduced the referral burden on national centres whilst increasing service availability in regional hospitals.

PREMs-based patient experience measurement

Another recognised initiative introduced Patient Reported Experience Measures (PREMs) as a structured method for capturing patient feedback during healthcare services. PREMs collects information about patients’ experiences across different stages of treatment and provides data used for service evaluation and follow-up actions.

Patients submit feedback by scanning a barcode available in service areas after receiving care. The responses connect to the hospital’s electronic medical record system, allowing healthcare professionals to review patient feedback directly within the clinical information platform. The integration allows service units and clinicians to review reported experiences and identify areas requiring follow-up within routine clinical workflows.

Healthcare Asia Awards is an awards programme focused on acknowledging exceptional hospitals across Asia that redefine the standards of excellence in the healthcare industry.
