JEC Eye Hospitals & Clinics Wins at Healthcare Asia Awards 2026
The organisation was recognised for its dry eye standardisation programme and high-volume cataract surgery services.
JEC Eye Hospitals & Clinics received two honours at the Healthcare Asia Awards 2026, winning Clinical Service Initiative of the Year - Indonesia and Specialty Clinic of the Year (Ophthalmology) - Indonesia.
The awards recognised the organisation’s structured dry eye disease programme implemented across its network, as well as the measurable surgical performance achieved by JEC @ Tambora in Jakarta.
Standardising dry eye diagnosis and management nationwide
The Clinical Service Initiative of the Year - Indonesia was awarded for JEC Eye Hospitals & Clinics’ Integrated Dry Eye Standardisation and Awareness Programme. In Indonesia, dry eye disease is estimated to affect approximately 27.5% of the population, equivalent to more than 76 million individuals. Despite its high prevalence, the condition is often underdiagnosed and inconsistently managed.
The programme introduced a coordinated framework integrating public education initiatives with clinical protocols alignment across the network. A dedicated microsite and a gamified self-assessment tool based on the Dry Eye Questionnaire-5 facilitated structured symptom screening. More than 400 patients completed the questionnaire annually, contributing to earlier clinical evaluation and consultation.
International observership programmes in Japan and South Korea further enhanced specialist exposure to updated diagnostic modalities and therapeutic approaches in dry eye management. Overseas experts also delivered lectures and hands-on workshops for ophthalmologists, nurses, and allied health professionals across the network. Within one year of implementation, dry eye diagnoses increased by an average of 30% across the group, with several centres reporting increases of up to 80% following the adoption of standardised diagnostic protocols.
The initiative also introduced the Dry Eye Spa, integrating protocol-driven meibomian gland dysfunction management and Intense Pulsed Light Therapy into routine clinical care. Comprehensive workforce development programmes covered more than 150 ophthalmologists, over 400 nurses, and more than 650 allied health professionals, supporting consistent clinical practice across the network.
High surgical volume within a compact specialty clinic
The Specialty Clinic of the Year (Ophthalmology) - Indonesia award recognised the operational and clinical performance of JEC @ Tambora. The clinic operates within a 500-square-metre facility, staffed by 11 ophthalmologists and approximately 30 clinical and administrative personnel.
In 2024, the clinic recorded more than 35,000 outpatient visits and performed over 5,000 surgical procedures, including more than 3,500 cataract surgeries. The admission-to-surgery conversion rate exceeded the network average by more than 65%, representing the highest rate amongst JEC clinics.
Operational efficiency was supported by a structured patient-flow management system, digital appointment scheduling, and a pre-operative pupil dilation protocol performed at home, which reduced on-site preparation time and enabled higher daily surgical throughput. The clinic reported a surgical complication rate of approximately 1%, consistent with established safety benchmarks in ophthalmic surgery.
