Guam Memorial Hospital Authority emerges victorious with two wins at Healthcare Asia Awards 2026

It took home the Facilities Improvement Initiative of the Year - Guam and the Hospital of the Year - Guam accolades.

The Guam Memorial Hospital Authority (GMHA) received two honours at the Healthcare Asia Awards 2026, earning the Facilities Improvement Initiative of the Year - Guam and Hospital of the Year - Guam awards.

The recognition highlights the hospital’s work over the past 24 months to strengthen operations, maintain uninterrupted services, and advance important facility improvements whilst continuing to care for patients across Guam and the broader Micronesian region.

Over this period, GMHA has continued to provide emergency, inpatient, surgical, and maternal services whilst navigating workforce challenges, regulatory requirements, and the realities of operating within an ageing facility.

One of the hospital’s key achievements has been progress in hospital-wide quality management and oversight. In 2024, GMHA received national recognition through the Health Quality Innovators Programme for improvements across more than 30 federally aligned quality and patient safety measures.

These efforts reflect the hospital’s continued focus on strengthening patient care and ensuring that quality and safety remain central to daily operations.

Alongside these clinical improvements, GMHA has also strengthened management practices and operational stability, advancing reimbursement alignment efforts and sequencing initiatives that support long-term sustainability whilst ensuring that patient care continues without interruption.

The hospital has also expanded clinical collaboration and structured affiliations that support access to specialised expertise. These partnerships strengthen care coordination, reinforce clinical oversight, and help ensure consistent standards of care across the hospital.

Through these efforts, GMHA demonstrated strong operational leadership and institutional resilience, earning recognition as Hospital of the Year - Guam.

“For our team, this recognition is really about the people who show up here every day to care for our community,” said GMHA Interim Chief Executive Officer and Administrator Dr Joleen M. Aguon. “Our staff have continued working steadily to strengthen patient care, improve the hospital environment, and build systems that support safer, more reliable care. Seeing those efforts recognised at the regional level is meaningful, but more importantly, it reflects the commitment our healthcare workers bring to serving the people of Guam.”

In addition to operational and clinical improvements, GMHA also received the Facilities Improvement Initiative of the Year - Guam award for its comprehensive effort to strengthen the hospital’s physical environment whilst continuing to operate as Guam’s only public hospital.

A major component of this initiative is the nearly $5m roof and exterior envelope restoration project, designed to improve climate resilience, reduce moisture intrusion, and extend the life of the hospital building.

Significant upgrades to cooling infrastructure have also been undertaken, including new chillers and cooling towers to improve temperature control, air circulation, infection prevention, and overall comfort within patient care areas.

Additional improvements include a parking expansion project aimed at improving access and easing congestion for patients, families, and staff. Obsolete structures on the campus have also been removed to improve safety and circulation whilst allowing greater flexibility for future campus planning.

The hospital is also working in partnership with the Guam Power Authority to strengthen the electrical infrastructure supporting new equipment and facility improvements.

All of these improvements have been implemented whilst GMHA continues to operate around the clock, maintaining uninterrupted emergency and inpatient services for the island and the surrounding region.

The Healthcare Asia Awards recognise hospitals across the region that demonstrate excellence in healthcare delivery and innovation, highlighting institutions that continue to strengthen care for the communities they serve.
