Advanced maternal care and preterm birth prevention elevate patient outcomes.

Damansara Specialist Hospital 2 won Specialty Hospital of the Year (Women's) - Malaysia in the Healthcare Asia Awards 2026.

Preterm birth remains a significant challenge in maternal and neonatal healthcare, contributing to long-term complications and emotional stress for families. Damansara Specialist Hospital 2 developed a dedicated preterm birth management programme, focused on early identification, specialist intervention, and coordinated care for high-risk pregnancies, including cases of cervical insufficiency.

The hospital’s programme is led by an obstetrician and gynaecologist with feto-maternal medicine subspecialty training, supported by two additional specialists and specialised nursing teams. This multidisciplinary model allows early risk stratification, personalised care planning, and timely interventions, ensuring pregnancies progress safely towards maturity.

A key element of Damansara Specialist Hospital 2’s approach is advanced preventive care. The hospital reports a 98% success rate for Shirodkar cerclage procedures, a specialised technique to prevent premature cervical dilation, and an equivalent 98% rate of successful mature deliveries amongst patients under this programme. These results reflect the hospital’s structured protocols and subspecialist oversight.

Beyond clinical care, Damansara Specialist Hospital 2 places emphasis on patient engagement and community support. The hospital initiated the Cervical Insufficiency Society of Malaysia, a patient support group that raises awareness, provides peer support, and improves understanding of cervical insufficiency. This initiative encourages early medical presentation, reduces anxiety, and strengthens adherence to follow-up care.

Education is a core component of the hospital’s strategy. Continuing medical education programmes for midwives enhance early detection of high-risk pregnancies, whilst cardiotocography masterclasses for general practitioners improve antenatal monitoring and timely referral. Monthly antenatal classes ensure that patients receive consistent guidance on preterm birth prevention.

Damansara Specialist Hospital 2 also maintains comprehensive neonatal care. When preterm delivery is unavoidable, specialist neonatologists and a fully equipped neonatal intensive care unit provide immediate support. Preventive healthcare is complemented by programmes such as respiratory syncytial virus vaccination for expectant mothers, alongside HPV screening and vaccination.

With around 850 deliveries annually, Damansara Specialist Hospital 2 demonstrates consistent service capacity whilst maintaining focused excellence in preterm birth management.
