Mahkota Medical Centre to expand capacity to 430 beds by 2029

New block marks first major physical expansion since 1994.

Mahkota Medical Centre in Melaka, Malaysia, will increase its total bed capacity to 430 by 2029, marking its first major physical expansion since it opened in 1994.

“The new hospital block is scheduled to be completed in phases from 2028 and is expected to strengthen further Melaka’s position as a regional medical and medical travel destination,” the hospital said in a statement.

The expansion aims to support more complex cases through expanded critical care services, advanced clinical infrastructure, additional inpatient and day care facilities, and enhanced cancer services.

Key developments include a smart-enabled intensive care unit, a fully digital pathology laboratory, new operating theatres, additional inpatient wards with more single rooms, enhanced day care facilities, and an expanded cancer centre.

“The project will also double the hospital’s current parking capacity, alongside additional food, beverage, and retail outlets to provide greater convenience for patients and visitors,” it said.

Teo Chin Yee, CEO of Mahkota Medical Centre, said the expansion will position the hospital as the largest private hospital in Melaka by 2029 whilst advancing its SMART Hospital journey.

The hospital’s nursing and allied health workforce is expected to increase by up to 10% to support the expansion.

Chin Wei Jia, Executive Director and Group CEO of HMI Medical, noted the importance of strengthening healthcare capacity in response to Melaka’s ageing population, increasing chronic disease burden, and changing expectations of care.

The groundbreaking ceremony, themed “A New Chapter in Healthcare Begins”, was officiated by Datuk Seri Utama Ab Rauf Bin Yusoh, Chief Minister of Melaka, and attended by representatives from the healthcare sector, corporate partners, and the local community.
