Melbourne's Angliss Hospital set to open $78m expansion

Four operating theatres and a 32-bed ward increase capacity for surgery and inpatient care.

The Allan Labor Government will officially open the expanded Angliss Hospital on 15 July, following a $78m (A$112m) redevelopment aimed at boosting healthcare capacity in Melbourne's outer eastern suburbs.

Located in the suburb of Ferntree Gully, the expanded Angliss Hospital features a new four-storey building that includes four operating theatres, a 32-bed inpatient ward, and dedicated spaces for outpatient services.

The expansion is expected to enable the hospital to treat an additional 1,300 patients each year.

The redevelopment comes as the population served by the hospital is projected to grow to more than 900,000 people by 2036.

The additional capacity is also expected to help reduce pressure on emergency departments and inpatient wards across the Eastern Health network, which manages public healthcare services in Melbourne's eastern region.

The project is also expected to create 49 new full-time equivalent healthcare positions.

Victoria's 2026–27 state budget allocated $31.17m (A$44.8m) to support the opening and operation of the expanded hospital.

The state government said the completion of the project marks the 12th new public hospital delivered under its administration as part of ongoing investment in Victoria's public healthcare system.
