Bangkok Hospital Group's Michael Mitchell to grace the Healthcare Asia Forum

He will discuss how Thai hospitals can gain an international edge.

Michael Mitchell is an experienced private hospital administrator, with more than 12 years of experience in running Australian private hospitals. He started working with the Bangkok Hospital Group (BHG) in November 2018 as the Hospital Director of Bangkok International Hospital, which is due to open in mid-2019.

Prior to joining BHG, Mitchell was with Newcastle Private Hospital, a member of the Healthscope Group, from 2011 to 2018. Between 2008 and 2012, he was with Dubbo Private Hospital, where he was the Hospital CEO in 2010-2012 and the general manager of Healthe Work during 2008-2010.

Mitchell graduated from the University of Queensland in 1992 with an undergraduate degree in human movement studies in education. He co-founded Balance Rehabilitation Services, the first independent physical therapy company accredited to provide treatment outside a hospital environment. After selling the business in 2000, Michael moved to Melbourne to take the role as the national workplace health manager at Mayne Health.

Mitchell was kind enough to give a few minutes to talk about his passion with Healthcare Asia.

What were the previous experiences and positions you've held that contributed to who you are as an expert today?

I’ve been working in the Australian healthcare industry since 2001. For the last 12 years, I have been running hospitals in Australia. My last hospital was Newcastle Private Hospital a member of Healthscope group. Newcastle Private Hospital is the largest regional private hospital in Australia: 189 beds, 12 operating theatres, 1,000 surgical procedures per month and 2,000 births a year.

What are your key business philosophies?

I’m passionate about running hospitals because they do good things for people. When they come to a hospital, they need our help and it is our job to provide them with a safe supportive environment that will help them get better. Hospitals are about people, and I take a people-based approach to running a hospital.

Can you give us a glimpse of what you will share at the Healthcare Asia Forum?
