Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital develops patient-derived meningioma organoids

Researchers used cells from patients to create a model similar to actual brain tumours.

A team from Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital Neurosurgery Department has developed meningioma organoids from 3D cultured stem cells.

The researchers utilised cells from four meningioma patients to create a model that closely mimics the structure and function of actual brain tumours.

Moreover, they retained their histological features for over nine weeks after repeated cryopreservation and were validated through immunohistochemistry and whole-exome sequencing, showing a degree of similarity to the original specimen.

According to the hospital, these organoids offer an alternative to animal testing and are expected to contribute development of precision medicine for brain tumours.
