The Australian government has announced an expansion of the Hospital Kindy programme in Queensland, extending the service to eight regional hospitals with additional funding of approximately $464,919 (A$700,000) per year.
Hospitals in Ipswich, Rockhampton, Toowoomba and the Sunshine Coast are scheduled to begin offering the programme in 2026.
The rollout started in Cairns, the Gold Coast, Logan and Townsville.
To date, the service has delivered 100 bedside kindergarten sessions to 68 children at these sites.
The programme offers play-based learning activities for children in hospital, delivered by qualified teachers and tailored to each child’s interests, physical needs, and learning requirements.
