Diagnostic imaging to boost medical devices market in Japan

This is because of the growing integration of AI and data automation.

Japan's diagnostic imaging market will reach JPY1.19t (US$10.4b) by 2027 propelled by integration of data automation and AI in diagnostic devices, which will be driven by rising demand for efficient and streamlined diagnostic services.

"These technologies will help ease the burden on healthcare providers and personnel, and improve patient experience, amid Japan’s large and expanding ageing population," according to Fitch Solutions' BMI Research.

For instance, in June 2023, "Shimadzu, a Japanese multinational company that operates several business divisions including Shimadzu Medical Systems, acquired French software company Biomaneo and its clinical software that links laboratory information systems with testing devices."

With this acquisition, Shimadzu seeks to improve data automation in Japan’s hospitals and enhance diagnostic services.

Olympus, a company best known for its camera manufacturing, has been shifting its focus to medical equipment, in particular endoscopy products.

In December 2022, it acquired UK-based company Odin Vision, a company that manufactures endoscopy equipment which leverages cloud and AI to improve diagnostic services such as colonoscopy and esophagogastroduodenoscopy procedures.
