Singapore to redevelop Alexandra Hospital for active agaeing initiative

The redeveloped hospital will comprise around 1,300 beds.

Singapore’s Alexandra Hospital redevelopment is underway as part of an initiative aligning with a national response to the ageing population.

The redeveloped hospital in the Queenstown district is set to comprise around 1,300 beds and a nursing home with about 400 beds.

The hospital will also implement an operating model across different patient types, allowing them to remain in the same bed whilst receiving acute and subsequently step-down care.

In the initiative's groundbreaking ceremony, Health Minister Ong Ye Kung mentioned they would recognise the hospital’s historical and heritage value.

“We will be conserving Blocks 1, 2, and 6 which currently house clinics, wards, operating theatres and diagnostic imaging. These three blocks have been gazetted by the Urban Redevelopment Authority,” Ong said.

“For buildings not gazetted for conservation, the redevelopment team is adopting a curated dismantling approach. It will incorporate elements of the historical buildings into the new hospital’s architecture, blending the past with the present in a harmonious manner,” Ong added.

Originally built in 1938, the redeveloped Alexandra Hospital is expected to open progressively from 2028.
