Redcliffe Hospital trials new tech for precise antibiotic dosing

It uses data and computer modelling combined with blood test results.

Redcliffe Hospital is trialling a technology that enables pharmacists to calculate more exact doses of the antibiotic vancomycin for patients.

The technology uses data and computer modelling combined with blood test results to determine how each patient’s body processes the drug.

The trial’s early results show both clinical and financial benefits, according to Pharmacy Director Ann Whitaker.

“A preliminary cost/benefit analysis suggests a potential annualised cost saving to the Redcliffe service of up to $234,085 (A$355,000) by moving to the new method,” Whitaker said.

The trial has been running for about a year.
