Broken Hill hospital upgrade delivers modern emergency care in NSW

The redevelopment includes arts integration to improve patient experience.

Broken Hill Hospital’s $12m emergency department (ED) upgrade is complete after 18 months, delivering a modern facility for local healthcare needs.

The construction was divided into three stages with the final stage upgrades including a new main entry, reception area, waiting room and triage space, a new interview/consult room, and two treatment bays.

The ED extension, reconfiguration of existing treatment bays, new staff areas and clinical back-of-house areas also opened its doors in stages earlier this year.

As part of the New South Wales government's $700m Statewide Mental Health Infrastructure Program, the redevelopment includes the new Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit and $12m ED upgrade.

The Health and the Arts Framework 2024-2032 underscores the role of the arts in bettering healthcare experience amongst patients, staff, and communities as artwork created by local artists are installed in various areas of the hospital.

The community of Broken Hill will also benefit from new Key Health Worker Accommodation, the first to be delivered in the Far West Local Health District as part of the

The Key Health Worker Accommodation is a perk for Broken Hill’s community as it is part of the Minns Labor Government's $200.1m program.

With the completion of 20 new health worker units this year, it will aid in attracting and retaining essential healthcare workers to the region.

“The upgrade will not only help ED staff deliver high-quality-care but also ensures Broken Hill and surrounding communities have access to a first-class and modern health facility,” Minister for Regional Health Ryan Park stated.
