Dharmais Cancer Hospital garners two wins at Healthcare Asia Awards 2024

Competent human resources, superior services, facilities, and infrastructures help the hospital provide excellent patient treatment.

Indonesian National Cancer Center - Dharmais Cancer Hospital (Pusat Kanker Nasional Rumah Sakit Kanker Dharmais) was awarded two major titles at the Healthcare Asia Awards 2024 for its strong performance in oncology and comprehensive breast cancer diagnosis and treatment capabilities.

Dharmais Cancer Hospital accepted patients from all regions of Indonesia and treated over 276,000 patients in 2023. It also has a multidisciplinary team for cancer treatment, consisting of various specialist doctors, nurses, genomic staff, researchers, and other health workers.

Amongst their best services is microsurgery, which specialist consultant doctors who are competent in their fields have carried out on hundreds of patients over the past two years.

Another service is radiopharmaceuticals. Radioisotopes are used in nuclear medicine for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes in cancer. The tools used to facilitate this service are PET CT scan and Cyclotron. Competent nuclear pharmacy specialist pharmacists have carried out this service to handle cancer treatment.

Radiotherapy is also one of the excellent services offered by Dharmais Cancer Hospital. This treatment uses ionising radiation to stop the growth and spread of cancer cells in human organs. The hospital utilises sophisticated and up-to-date equipment for cancer treatment, including Linac, CT-Simulator, X-Ray Simulator, MicroSelectron HDR, X-Ray C-Arm, and Blood Irradiator.

Dharmais Cancer Hospital also provides early-detection services. This programme was held to screen for early diagnosis to achieve better outcomes. This programme offered superior devices, including mobile mammography, breast ultrasound, HPV, and Pap smear examination. Besides examination programmes, Dharmais also actively contributes to several seminars to increase the public's knowledge about cancer.

Along with providing services, Dharmais Cancer Hospital continues to strive in educational and research activities. Dharmais held several training and workshops in the field of cancer, which were dedicated to doctors, nurses, and other health workers. Dharmais Cancer Hospital is a leading research institution in cancer genomics. The Indonesian Ministry of Health has designated the hospital as a research centre for biomedical innovation and public health through the Biomedical Genome Science Initiative (BGSi), a national programme that aims to support the use of genomics information as an integral part of its health services in order to improve diagnosis, treatment, and medication for diseases of significance in Indonesia.

Battling breast cancer

Dharmais Cancer Hospital, recognising that breast cancer is the most common cancer found in the female population in Indonesia, takes the initiative in dealing with the disease through various early detection programmes, diagnostic procedures, and comprehensive, evidence-based therapy.

Dharmais conducts massive education, public seminars, and early detection programmes in primary and secondary health facilities. It also performs mobile mammography screening to detect cancer early and improve the prognosis.

Diagnostic procedures, including ultrasonography, mammography, tomography, breast MRI, image-guided biopsy, hormonal profile examination, and genomic examination, are carried out in accordance with the latest developments in medical science. Various surgical procedures, including breast conservation surgery, mastectomy, breast reconstruction, and super microsurgery, are also performed to provide the best therapeutic results for patients. In patients with late-stage massive complications, advanced treatment, including systemic and microsurgical procedures, can also be performed by their experts to improve the patient’s quality of life.

Dharmais Cancer Hospital has four world-class external radiation equipment that play an important role in managing breast cancer patients. A total of 640 breast cancer patients in 2022 received external radiation procedures carried out by Radiation Oncology Specialists experts in accordance with the breast cancer patient management team.

Dharmais Cancer Hospital's position as a national cancer centre and expertise in the comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer were lauded in the prestigious awards programme, with the Oncology Hospital of the Year—Indonesia and the Clinical Service Initiative of the Year—Indonesia category wins, respectively.
