Bushu Pharmaceuticals brings home two wins at Healthcare Asia Pharma Awards 2024

It has initiated CO2 emission reduction and wastewater management initiatives to support the environment and the industry. 

Japanese CDMO company Bushu Pharmaceuticals clinched two major titles at the recently held Healthcare Asia Pharma Awards 2024 for its various efforts and innovations in “creating a healthier tomorrow” for the healthcare industry.

These efforts include reducing CO2 emissions, wherein the company has set a midterm target for 2030: cutting its CO2 emissions from the use of electricity and city gas by at least 38% compared to 2016.

To accomplish this, Bushu Pharmaceuticals installed 2,300 solar panels on the roof of its Kawagoe factory in July 2023. This will realise an annual reduction of more than 600 tons of CO2. Its factories in Kawagoe and Aizu have also switched to renewable electricity between September to October 2023.

The past year also saw the company replacing plastic blister packs for pre-filled syringes, safety devices, and auto-injectors with safe and durable paper packaging. It is also promoting the replacement of plastic packaging materials with biomass film.

Meanwhile, Bushu Pharmaceuticals is also managing wastewater according to self-imposed control values that are stricter than the regulatory standards to ensure that the wastewater has minimal environmental impact.

It has introduced a wastewater treatment system that combines microbial wastewater treatment and filters at its three plants in Kawagoe, Misato, and Aizu factories. In the Kawagoe factory, treated water is also reused in the cooling towers of its air conditioning and refrigeration units, ultimately saving water resources.

It is for these initiatives that Bushu Pharmaceuticals was recognised in the ESG Program of the Year - Japan and Sustainability Initiative of the Year - Japan at the Healthcare Asia Pharma Awards, underscoring the company's leadership in fostering sustainable practices and driving positive environmental impact within Japan's healthcare sector.
