Kauvery Hospital advances spine care with endoscopic fusion in Chennai
Procedure uses an approximately 8-mm incision.
Kauvery Hospital Alwarpet has introduced endoscopic fusion surgery in Chennai.
The minimally invasive procedure uses an approximately 8-mm incision to access the spine with a working channel and high-definition camera.
Surgeons can decompress nerves, prepare the disc space, and place an interbody implant with fixation whilst preserving surrounding muscle, bone, and ligaments.
The technique is intended for selected patients with degenerative lumbar conditions, spinal stenosis, disc disease, low-grade instability, persistent nerve-root compression and revision spine surgery. It may also be considered for some elderly patients who may face greater risks from extensive open fusion surgery.
Compared with open spine surgery and standard minimally invasive surgery, the approach aims to reduce tissue damage, blood loss and postoperative pain, whilst enabling earlier mobilisation and shorter hospital stays.
“Endoscopic procedures are also used for disc herniation and nerve compression," said Dr. Keerthivasan P, senior consultant spine and orthopaedic surgeon at Kauvery Hospital Alwarpet, Chennai. "In certain cases, they may help avoid the need for extensive fusion by preserving the spine’s natural stability."
He said the procedure is not suitable for all patients. High-grade slips, some complex deformities and cases requiring wide reconstruction may still require conventional surgery.
